Safety of school children has always been of utmost priority for GeoHazards Society (GHS). GHS have been instrumental in creating comprehensive safe schools in Delhi that have become models for school safety projects nationally. GHS also conducts training programmes for school safety advocates in partnership with State governments including Orissa, Delhi, Assam, etc. and Training of Trainers programmes for the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). In Gurgaon, we are working with the corporate sector in promoting comprehensive school safety and have an ongoing project with Bechtel Foundation in which we trained Bechtel employee volunteers to carry out School safety activities in various private schools in Gurgaon.  An annual report for the year 2009 & an interim report for 2010 are here.

Non Structural Mitigation: For the first time in the country, an earthquake risk mitigation project considered aspects of falling hazards mitigation with the GHI & GHS project - Delhi Earthquake Safety Initiative for Lifeline Buildings (DESI). In urban earthquakes, it has been seen that almost 50% of the losses are caused by the falling of objects inside buildings in moderate to strong earthquake shaking and are called falling hazards. GHI & GHS demonstrated falling hazards mitigation in many school buildings around the country. Manual on falling hazards mitigation in schools developed by GHI & GHS is available for free download.

GHS has been partnering with the Blind Relief Association, New Delhi to develop it into a comprehensive disaster prepared campus.   

GHS and GHI together with Action for Autism, New Delhi has come forward to work for Comprehensive Disaster Preparedness at Action for Autism Campus in New Delhi.

Tibetan School ShakeOut

GeoHazards Society is organizing the Tibetan School Shakeout across the Tibetan Schools in India in collaboration with GeoHazards International and the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA).
